The Ashford Leisure Center opens the Canford Heath Fire Evacuation Center

An evacuation center has been opened in Canford Heath for residents evacuated from their homes.

People were told to avoid the area as firefighters battled a raging heath fire on the ground.

Many who are already in their homes have been told to close their windows and doors.

Police used a tannoy helicopter to order people from the heathland.

An evacuation center was opened at the Ashdown Leisure Center.

Dorset police are helping with the incident, and the Ashdown Leisure Center is opening up as a local evacuation center for anyone who can’t get to their homes.

Roads around the area have been closed as firefighters try to put out the fire.

Dorset and Wiltshire Fire and Rescue said in an update: “A large number of our resources are still in operation.

“Due to several road closures, we still recommend the public to avoid this area. #AshdownLeisureCentre has opened as a local evacuation point for anyone who does not have access to their homes.”
