Sainz Jnr handed over a new contract with Ferrari as F1 heads for Imola
Watch Max Verstappen kick off Sunday’s Emilia Romagna Grand Prix to pole position after a dramatic late overtaking ahead of Charles Leclerc during Saturday’s sprint race, winning and finishing first in the Grand Prix itself.
The Dutchman started in Imola from the front before losing the lead to Leclerc in the opening lap after a slow escape. But after the frenetic end of the 21-lap Verstappen, Ferrari ruined Ferrari’s home party by fighting his way to Leclerco on the Tamburello Variant, winning the checkerboard flag and pole position for tomorrow’s main race.
However, further distress occurred for Lewis Hamilton after he started 13th and finished only 14-24 hours after both Mercedes cars did not make it to Q3 for the first time in almost 10 years during Friday’s qualifying in Imola.
Elsewhere in the sprint race, Sergio Perez finished third ahead of Carlos Sainz of Ferrari – who made the P10 in P4 a series of sparkling overtimes – with Land Norris fifth behind McLaren, third from the starting position.

Max Verstappen’s reaction
My start was not very good. It took a while for the pressure to develop. I think at the end of the race we were a little better on the tires. We had a good fight in the second turn. ”
