“When I picked him up in the mosquito category at the tournament, he scored 45 goals in five games, including 19 against Lake Placid,” explains Jean-Marc Lalonde.
The coach immediately called Guy Lafleur’s father to persuade him to let his son participate in the Quebec tournament.
Despite success throughout his career, Guy Lafleur has remained close to the Eastern Ontario community, says Mr Lalonde.
He remembers that a few years after leaving the region, the “blonde Demon” called him to have the two men eat together in a restaurant.
Jean-Marc Lalonde then insisted that Guy Lafleur come and meet the students of his school.
Lafleur, true to form, did not do things halfway and arrived at school by helicopter.
“He landed in the schoolyard and met all the students. 675 students except all teachers! ”Says Mr. Lalonde.
